Dear Parents,
Welcome to 4th grade! My name is Laura Koch, and I will be your child’s math teacher this year. I wanted to give you some basic information that will make the school year go by smoothly.
-
My email address: kochlf@scsk12.org *This is the easiest way to communicate with me. Feel free to email anytime. I will respond within 48 hours, but usually sooner.
My webpage address: https://kochlf.wixsite.com/koch *I update my webpage weekly. I aim to have the following week’s plans on the site by Friday afternoon for those students who like to get ahead.
-
I assign math homework almost every night, but Friday. Please work with your child if possible. Assignments will have pre-selected problems to complete. (usually under 10 problems) Homework should take 10-15 minutes max. If your child forgets homework, please allow them to take responsibility. Homework can still be completed if forgotten. However, your child will receive a homework conduct mark.
-
I try my best to send home one extra credit assignment each quarter. I grade extra credit for accuracy and will then determine how to add extra points to averages. I will NOT accept any extra credit that is turned in late or from students who have several missing assignments. I am not required to provide extra credit to students. Please understand that extra credit will not bring a C average up to an A.
-
We use a clear plastic sheet protector AND an Expo marker DAILY. PLEASE always make sure that your child has a working Expo marker. These are the essential supplies needed in this class every day. I will provide the sheet protectors, and markers were on the supply list. However, Expo markers do not last all year. You may want to restock on Expo markers during Winter Break.
-
STUDY GUIDES: I ALWAYS send home a study guide several days before an assessment. Studying is a relatively new habit for 4th graders. Please make sure you work together at home to build good studying habits. Because I send home study guides that are very similar to the actual test, I will not accept corrections to assessments or allow retakes unless indicated in an IEP. There are typically 4 assessments per quarter.
-
If your child scores below a 60 on a math classroom assignment, please sign and return the paper.
-
Math Facts: Timed multiplication quizzes are taken every Friday. (2 min.) These are entered as project grades. Project grades only account for 5% of final averages.
-
Check PowerSchool often to check your child’s average. I will send home graded papers via Wednesday work folders. However, students can sometimes forget work folders at school or papers get misplaced in transit from school to home. PowerSchool is a great back up!

Looking forward to a great year! I hope to continue developing your child’s number sense and math confidence!
