Week of August 10th -14th

Announcements:

-We made it through the first week of 4th grade!  Our students did an amazing job adjusting to new routines and expectations.  We appreciate your support as we navigate this year together.

-Meet the Teacher Night will be held on Tuesday, August 11th.  Two sessions will be offered and will both begin in the cafeteria.  Admin would like to take a few minutes to share some school expectations with parents.  Following the brief meeting in the cafeteria, parents will be dismissed to classrooms.  Our team’s meeting will be held in Mrs. Koch’s classroom (Rm 224; annex building, upstairs).

The first session will begin promptly at 5:00 PM.  The second session will begin promptly at 6:15 PM.  This meeting will be for parents only.

-Richland’s Annual Capital Campaign is in full swing!  This fundraiser allows all funds to be directed towards our school!  Link to Capital Campaign

Math:

Topic 1: Place Value

Most of this topic covers review skills from 3rd grade, but will focus heavily on how place value plays a role in almost every concept that we will cover!  Your child will be working with place value charts a LOT this year!  It is a foundational skill that truly helps students for the long term.

 

On Friday, students will take the 3x math facts quiz.  It will contain 20 problems; 2 minutes.  Please review the 3x math facts to prepare!  I will score this one.

Our first test is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, August 20th.  I will have a definitive date in my next newsletter.

 

This week:

Lesson 2: Place Value relationships (understanding each value increases 10x as digits move to the left)

Lesson 3: Using place value to compare numbers (>, <, =)

Lesson 4: Rounding numbers through the hundred thousands using number lines

*We will spend several days on this skill.  It requires solid number sense. 

Rounding Part 1: Finding 10, 100, or 1,000 more or less

Rounding Part 2: Using number lines to round to the nearest thousand

Rounding Part 3: Using number lines to round to the nearest ten thousand and hundred thousand

**Assuming technology cooperates, we will begin IReady fall diagnostic on Friday, Aug. 14th.

 

*If you need additional review, the textbook can be found online in students’ Clever accounts.  It is down at the moment, but should hopefully be available again soon. 

 

ELA:

RL.KID.3: Describe characters, setting, and events in stories and dramas

 

Homework: 4th grade reading homework is a "Redhawk Readers" log where students are required to read a minimum of 80 minutes each week. How students choose to complete this is up to them. For example: a student might read 20 minutes on Monday and Tuesday, then 30 minutes on Thursday, and 10 on Friday (totaling 80 minutes or more).  More info will be sent home with first homework, it's due every other Monday.

Week of August 3rd-7th

Welcome back to school!  We are excited to have everyone back!  This week will be amazing.  We ask for grace and patience for the first few weeks as we build positive environments in our classrooms.  Please read all communications that are sent over the coming weeks very carefully.  There is plenty of important information headed your way. (ESPECIALLY BELOW!)

 

Announcements: (We have a LOT this week!)

PLEASE ensure your email address is correct in PowerSchool.  We use PowerSchool to send class email messages.  Thank you.

-4th graders have a late lunch!  (1:00-1:30) All students may bring a HEALTHY, DRY snack to school each day.  (Granola bar, pretzels, goldfish, popcorn, etc.) 

Apple sauce or Go-gurt pouches are okay IF they are in a POUCH.  Please do not send Cheetos or Takis (messy fingers), or items that require a spoon or fork.

-Students are okay without a water bottle!  We do have working water fountains in each hallway.  However, students may bring in a water bottle if they wish.  Water bottle expectations will be dependent upon classroom teachers.  Please do not send in Stanley cups with open straws.

-Many important notes will likely come home this week.  Be on the lookout for any notes that need to be signed and returned.

-Arrival and Dismissal for 4th grade occurs at the Main Building East Entrance.  Students may arrive to school by 7:45 AM.  Please do not drop off your child unsupervised prior to 7:45!  This is a safety issue, as no adults will be outside supervising.  Dropping off students at the corner playground to play unsupervised prior to school is not allowed.

-PLEASE PLEASE label ALL sweaters, jackets, raincoats, lunchboxes, waterbottles, etc.  Our lost and found area last year was OVERFLOWING with items with no name in them.  Be mindful that we have MANY students with the same first name. 😉

-RECESS: During the first few weeks of school, there will be days when the heat index is considered dangerous for outside play.  Please be aware that on those days, we will have indoor free time.  We will not go outside unless it is safe to do so. 

 

*Meet the Teacher Night will be held on Tuesday, August 11th.  (PARENTS ONLY) There will be two sessions to choose from: 5:00 or 6:15 PM.  This will be a time to get to know our team of teachers!  Meet the Teacher will be held in Mrs. Koch’s room which is upstairs in the new building.  Please be mindful that Meet the Teacher is not a time for conferences.  We are happy to schedule a conference at a later time.

 

This week:

Homeroom:  We will learn classroom procedures/rules and learn about our classmates!  We will spend Monday and Tuesday with our class only.  On Wednesday, we will have a modified transition schedule to meet our switch teachers.  We will also practice what rotating to different classes will look like.  We will practice full rotations on Thursday and Friday.

 

Math:

-Lesson 1: Forms of numbers (expanded form and word form); Review of place value

-Lesson 2: Understanding place value relationships (1 hundred is 10x as much as 1 ten, 1 thousand is 10x as much as 1 hundred, etc.)

 

**On Friday, we will take a PRACTICE 2x math facts quiz (This will cover the 2 multiplication facts 0x2, 1x2,…., 12x2)  Students will have 2 minutes to complete 20 problems. (Students with 504s/IEPs will receive time and a half as documented in plans).  Math facts quizzes will ONLY count as 5% of final averages.  If your child has already mastered facts, that is fantastic!  I will still have them complete quizzes, as maintaining automaticity is crucial.  Next week, we will move to the 3x facts.  We will continue in order until the 12x fact family.

 

Science

Students will begin to learn about photosynthesis and the importance of the sun's energy for life on Earth.

 

Social Studies

Students will receive an overview of 4th grade social studies and begin to learn classroom reading practices.

ELA

Students will continue learning classroom procedures and begin learning about character traits as we start our first lesson on describing character, setting, and events.
